Café Mono Azul is a project dedicated to promoting the development and well-being of people and ecosystems through coffee.
Coffee has been in our family for more than four generations. Our great-grandparents grew coffee in San Mateo Piñas, Oaxaca, as did our grandfather, Filemón García. Now, we’ve taken our family’s history and tradition into our own hands by founding Café Mono Azul, a project that encompasses everything from coffee production to roasting and distribution. In collaboration with our farm’s neighbors and key collaborators, the Almaráz family, we developed a sustainable coffee plantation project and have begun producing specialty coffees. At our Casa Mono Azul, located in Querétaro, we roast, cup, distribute, and serve coffees from our farm, as well as coffees from fellow producers across the country.
In Mexico, 98.5% of coffee growers are small-scale producers. This means they have cultivated areas of less than 5 hectares.
Small-scale producers generate biodiverse and resilient ecosystems, use agroforestry practices, promote cooperative relationships, and protect cultural diversity. However, they face a high level of social marginalization, depend on intermediaries, are at the mercy of the volatile international market, and are more vulnerable to pests and climate disasters. We recognize their importance in our society, as well as the complexity of the challenges they face, which is why our project is focused on raising awareness and promoting their work.
